Books - Vaachas Chame
Preface: The story behind 'VAACHAS CHAME' For a book on Public Speaking , the title - 'VAACHAS CHAME' is an unusual one. "What does it mean?" is the invariable reaction from everyone. "It means: '(Lord) Grant me the Power of Expression', " I tell them. But, they still throw at me their puzzled looks: "From where the hell did you pick it up?" So, I have to tell them the story behind the title. And, I will tell it to you, here, before you throw at me your own. It was about two decades ago, that I first heard it in our class room. Mr. Ramakrishnan, our senior most and dynamic trainer, would charge the youngsters with these words, inspired by the ancient texts. "If Shiva, the Lord, appears before you and says, 'I have come with many boons for you; ask', what will you ask first?" Only the blank faces would stare at him. Then, in his inimitable style, Mr. Ramakrishnan would let them know: " 'VAACHAS CHAME'. Grant me the Power of Expression." "My dear young friends," he would continue, " to ask for any other boon, you need this first boon: the power of expression. That will be your 'gate pass' when you go out there -- into that big, bad world." The blank faces would, immediately, light up! I used to watch this scene with a great deal of delight. I had immediately sensed, that those two, little words were dynamites. packed with power. Yes, the power to transform, to heal. The words had a mythical, and a magical ring around them. They, also, had that timeless quality about them. And so, I had quietly resolved in my heart, then and there -yes, two decades ago - that, if at all I was going to write a book on the subject of Public Speaking, that it would bear this name, this title: 'VAACHAS CHAME'. So, this is the story. This is the 'gate pass'. Please collect it before you proceed. [ Top ]
